What is homeopathy?
Homeopathy
is a system of natural healing, which works by stimulating the
body to heal itself. The founder of homeopathy was a German
physician named Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843). Based on his
observations he formulated the law of similars, which states
that a substance, which produces a set of symptoms in a
healthy person, will cure those very symptoms when given to a
sick person. These principles were described by Hippocrates
2500 years ago and also were found in the old texts of
Ayurveda. The word homeopathy comes from Greek words meaning
similar + suffering. For example the homeopathic remedy Allium
Cepa made from onions is sometimes used to treat Hay fever
symptoms because a healthy person chopping onions usually
experiences runny nose and stinging eyes. A homeopathic remedy
made from coffee may be used to treat insomnia because coffee
makes one alert and sleepless.
It is a
holistic system and treats the whole person. It has a broader
view of disease and takes into account the interrelatedness of
physical, mental and emotional levels and their influence on
each other. Symptoms are not viewed as the disease but the
body’s effort to heal itself. A homeopathic remedy helps in
that effort. Homeopathy aims at healing from the inside
out and not on a superficial removal of
symptoms.
Homeopathy has an individualistic approach
and takes into account ones unique response to disease and
does not treat people as a collection of disease labels. Thus
ten people with headaches may be treated with ten different
remedies based on their unique individual response to
headache. Homeopathic remedies are powerful, gentle, nontoxic
and highly effective. Homeopathy is suitable for everyone from
babies to the elderly. Homeopathy is widespread in Europe,
Central and South America, the Indian subcontinent
and Africa. It is undergoing strong resurgence in Canada
and the United States.
What are Homeopathic
remedies?
These are derived from plants,
minerals, metals and animal sources. There are
approximately 3,500 remedies. Remedies are prepared in
Homeopathic pharmacies by a special procedure of serial
dilution and forceful pounding between dilutions. It is
thought that the processes of dilution and pounding
result in leaving an imprint of the energy pattern of the
original substance in the dilution medium.
These specially prepared and highly
diluted substances are given to healthy volunteers and their
symptoms are carefully recorded into homeopathic materia
medicas. Such an ultra diluted substance is then
administered in the minutest dose to the sick individual
whose disease symptoms closely match the symptoms produced by
this substance in a healthy individual. This encourages
individual’s own healing system to restore health rapidly,
gently and permanently.
In classical homeopathy only one
remedy is given at a time, which in the ideal case corresponds
perfectly to the total state of the patient. A combination of several homeopathic
remedies lacks the fine-tuning and individuality which are
hallmarks of the homeopathic system.
The ultra dilution used in the preparation of
homeopathic remedies makes them non toxic and safe for use
even by babies.
